Duct Tape vs. Packing Tape: A Procurement Manager’s $180,000 Lesson on Hidden Costs

The Tape Decision That Cost Us a Vendor and $4,200

Two years ago, I nearly made a decision that would’ve cost us a lot more than just tape.   • Choose Duck® brand tape if: You ship heavy, irregular, or high-rejection-risk items. If one failure could cost you $500+, the premium on Duck® tape is cheap insurance. Also if you want the labor savings and can invest $30 in a better dispenser.
  • A hybrid approach: We ended up using Duck® tape for the top 15% of our shipments by value and standard tape for the rest. That saved us $1,200 in tape costs while covering our riskiest packages.
